Roy Johnson for Mayor of Holly Hill
|
I was a U.S.A.F. Veteran
for 7 years in the Vietnam era. Military service is a time
proven and honorable way to learn and apply many new skills
such as teamwork, leadership and the ability to not only
do a good job but to finish it. Businesses even today prefer
veterans not only because of their training and proven abilities
but for their sense of honor and trustworthiness.
I worked for Florida Power
& Light for many years in a position that requires not
only teamwork but leadership abilities. We were required
to do the job right the first time as the lives of employees
depended on it. Also, I was required to learn and keep up
to date on the newest, most sophisticated electronic equipment
and software available. This required many hours of instruction
and training. I also held and still remain updated on worldwide
accepted certifications such as ASE and Fluid Power Society.
After the 1992 devastation
of Homestead by Hurricane Andrew I was sent, along with
many other fellow workers and volunteers, to help restore
the electrical infrastructure. We endured long, hot, muggy
days and nights, insects, debris and other hazards strewn
about. Sometimes we had to work with armed guards to insure
our safety while we did our job. To have to see the devastation
that so many people had to deal with was sometimes just
overwhelming. But our training, teamwork and caring kept
us going. We knew the only thing to do was to keep working
until the job is finished.
During the 2004 Hurricane
Season, particularly after Hurricane Frances, I spent up
to 16 hour workdays working side by side with many other
FP&L employees to restore power to our area.

We did this not just because
it was our job but because critical businesses were without
power, including the nursing home my wife was in. The job
had to be done for thousands that were without power; some
for up to 10 days. Many families were without power including
my own. The fallen trees laid in my yard days after others
had cleaned their yards up. 16 hour workdays just don't
leave much time for cleanup especially when there's just
no energy left for the day.
I have the leadership, teamwork and decision making abilities
that have been tested in the worst of situations.
It's when you are hot, tired, the job seems endless and
your family is paying a price that you really learn what
you are capable of doing.
This, coupled with my success in business for over 40 years
in this area, proves that I have what it takes to be Mayor
of Holly Hill.
I'm not interested in being another career politician and
working on making myself look good. I'm interested in making
Holly Hill the best city that it can be.
